Swathi Kalidindi's passion for innovation began with a deeply personal experience. After watching her mother manage the side effects of diabetes medications, she began asking how treatments could be delivered precisely where they are needed while minimizing unwanted effects throughout the body. That question ultimately led her to pursue a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics at the University of Iowa, where she works in the Salem Laboratory of Advanced Drug and Gene Delivery developing nanoparticle eye drops for Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy, a disease that currently has no treatment other than surgery. Her efforts have helped improved the manufacturing process by transitioning from traditional methods to microfluidic synthesis, making the formulation more reproducible and closer to real-world production. She has received recognition for this work, earning First Prize at the 2025 Midwest Eye Research Symposium and being selected for a Student Travel Achievement Recognition Award from the Society of Biomaterials 2026.  

After completing her degree, Swathi hopes to work at the intersection of research and commercialization, helping translate promising discoveries into therapies that improve patients' lives. Through the Iowa Innovation Leadership Fellowship, she looks forward to gaining exposure to the innovation ecosystem, expanding her professional network, and developing the business knowledge needed to better understand how discoveries move from the laboratory to the patients who need them.
