Ethan Apawan
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Studies: JD, College of Law and MPH, College of Public Health
Ethan Apawan is driven by the belief that meaningful innovation requires more than scientific discovery—it also depends on the policies, partnerships, and legal frameworks that bring new ideas to patients. Pursuing both a J.D. and Master of Public Health at the University of Iowa, Ethan has built an interdisciplinary background spanning intellectual property, biotechnology, and health policy. Inspired by early experiences observing the gap between medical breakthroughs and patient access, he has focused on understanding how law and innovation work together to accelerate healthcare solutions. His interests center on creating pathways that help promising technologies navigate commercialization while remaining accessible to the communities they serve. Through the Iowa Innovation Leadership Fellowship, Ethan hopes to deepen his understanding of technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and collaborative innovation as he prepares for a career helping researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs translate groundbreaking discoveries into lasting public benefit.
