Studies: PhD student, Immunology

About Andrea: Andrea is driven by a commitment to making science more inclusive, impactful, and accessible. As a first-generation Hispanic student and PhD candidate in immunology, her research focuses on how inhaled exposures such as e-cigarette vapor, allergens, and viruses affect immune function in the lungs. She studies the role of monocytes and how these immune changes may contribute to chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, particularly in historically underserved communities.

Andrea’s work spans bioengineering, computational biology, and public health. She sees innovation as a way to challenge the status quo, elevate science literacy, and turn complex discoveries into real-world solutions. Her thesis reflects this approach by combining rigorous research with a broader vision for community impact.

Andrea hopes to lead initiatives that connect science, outreach, and policy. Whether through work with government agencies or nonprofit organizations, she is passionate about creating programs that expand access to healthcare and education while centering empathy and equity.

Outside of the lab, Andrea finds balance through hiking, biking, and spending time outdoors with her dog and partner, which helps her stay grounded and spark creative thinking.
